Why QBO to Excel

A .qbo file is plain text in OFX's SGML dialect, so Excel can't open it and QuickBooks only lets you import it, not read it. When you need to review a bank download before importing, hand it to a client, or build a reconciliation, you want the transactions in a sheet. Unclip reads every STMTTRN block and writes a workbook with a frozen header row and a filter.

What you get in the workbook

  1. Columns: Date, Description, Amount, Debit, Credit, Check number and Memo. The amount is signed; debit and credit are split for tools that want them apart.
  2. Dates are real Excel dates and amounts are numbers, so SUM, SUMIF and pivot tables work straight away.
  3. The header row is frozen and has a filter, so long downloads are easy to scan.
  4. Need CSV instead? Choose CSV under Other formats after converting. QFX and OFX files are accepted as input too.

How the conversion works

1. Read

Every STMTTRN block is read: date posted, amount, payee, memo, check number and the bank's transaction ID. OFX 1 (SGML) and OFX 2 (XML) both work, as do credit card files.

2. Check

Rows without a readable date and amount are counted and reported, never silently dropped. Totals in and out and the period are shown so you can compare them with the source before importing.

3. Write

A real .xlsx workbook: Excel dates, numeric amounts, a frozen header row and a filter. No add-ins needed.

Starting from a PDF statement? The statement converter reads it and checks every row against the printed balance.

Questions

Can I open a .qbo file in Excel directly?

Excel will show the raw tags on one column if you rename it to .txt. To get a proper table you need to parse the OFX structure, which is what this converter does.

Does this work with QFX and OFX files too?

Yes. QBO, QFX and OFX share the same structure; only the Intuit header tags differ.

Are transaction IDs kept?

They're used to order and de-duplicate rows. If you need the FITID column itself, write to us and we'll add it.
