Why convert to QuickBooks

QuickBooks only downloads recent history through bank feeds, and its CSV import is picky. A .qbo file is what QuickBooks treats as a real bank download: it brings in dates, amounts and payees in one step, and it's the usual way to backfill months of transactions or catch up a client's books.

Importing the QBO file into QuickBooks Online

  1. In QuickBooks Online, go to All apps, then Accounting, then Bank transactions, and select the account's tile.
  2. Open the Link account dropdown, select Upload from file, and choose the .qbo file.
  3. Pick the account in the QuickBooks account dropdown, select the transactions, and confirm.
  4. Review and categorize them in the For review tab. Intuit limits uploads to 350 KB and 1,000 lines, so split very long histories into date ranges.

Questions

Can't I just upload the PDF to QuickBooks Online?

You can: QuickBooks Online now reads PDF statements with AI, and you review the extracted rows side by side before saving. A QBO file from Unclip arrives already checked against the printed balances, works in QuickBooks Desktop too, and comes with Excel and CSV versions of the same data.

QuickBooks Desktop shows error OL-222. What now?

OL-222 means QuickBooks Desktop couldn't read the file, most often because of a special character such as an ampersand. Unclip writes these characters in the escaped form QuickBooks expects. If you still see an error, write to us and we'll sort it out with you.

Does it work with QuickBooks Desktop too?

Yes. In QuickBooks Desktop use File, then Utilities, then Import, then Web Connect Files.

Will the opening balance be imported as a deposit?

No. Only transactions are written to the file. The opening balance is used to check the rows, not imported as a transaction.
