Why QBO to CSV

CSV goes everywhere a .qbo file can't: Google Sheets, Xero, Wave, YNAB, a database, a Python script. Banks that only offer Web Connect downloads leave you with a file nothing but QuickBooks reads. This converter turns it into a plain, well-formed CSV with one row per transaction.

Using the CSV

  1. Dates are written 2026-01-31 (ISO), which every spreadsheet and import tool reads the same way.
  2. Amount is signed (money out negative). Debit and Credit columns carry the same figures unsigned, for tools that want them separately.
  3. Google Sheets: File, then Import, then Upload. Xero: Accounting, Bank accounts, Import a statement.
  4. The file is UTF-8 with comma separators and quoted fields, so payee names with commas stay in one column.

How the conversion works

1. Read

Every STMTTRN block is read: date posted, amount, payee, memo, check number and the bank's transaction ID. OFX 1 (SGML) and OFX 2 (XML) both work, as do credit card files.

2. Check

Rows without a readable date and amount are counted and reported, never silently dropped. Totals in and out and the period are shown so you can compare them with the source before importing.

3. Write

UTF-8 CSV with ISO dates, a signed amount column plus debit and credit columns, and quoted fields.

Starting from a PDF statement? The statement converter reads it and checks every row against the printed balance.

Questions

Why not just import the QBO into QuickBooks and export from there?

You can, but that imports the transactions into your books first. This converter lets you look at the data, or send it elsewhere, without touching QuickBooks.

Will the running balance be included?

QBO files carry a closing balance but no running balance per transaction, so the CSV has no Balance column. Convert a PDF statement on the home page if you need the running balance checked.

Is it really free?

Yes, for up to ten file conversions a day. Plans add unlimited conversions alongside the PDF statement converter.
