US checking account
Layout. Date, Description, Amount (signed), Balance. Dates as MM/DD, long descriptions wrapped onto a second line.
The layout used by most large US banks' online-banking PDFs.
Download PDFUK current account
Layout. Date, Description, Paid out, Paid in, Balance. The date is printed once per day and the balance only on the last row of each day.
The pattern used by most UK high-street banks.
Download PDFUS account without a balance column
Layout. Posting Date, Transaction Details, Withdrawals, Deposits. Opening and closing balances sit in a summary box above the table.
Common on US credit-union and some credit-card statements.
Download PDFCR / DR suffix style
Layout. ISO dates, amounts and balances written as 45.20 DR and 1,000.00 CR.
Seen on Australian, Indian and some business-banking statements.
Download PDFUK multi-line transactions
Layout. Each transaction spans two lines with the amount on the second one; the date is printed once per day.
An older UK layout that trips up most converters.
Download PDFUS layout with a deliberate error
Layout. Identical to the US sample, except one printed running balance is off by 10.00.
Use it to check whether a converter notices when the numbers don't add up. Unclip flags the exact row.

All six are generated by the same script we use to test our own parser, so every number reconciles, except in the file that is meant not to.
What a bank statement sample should include
A useful sample has the parts that break software, not just a tidy table: a header block with the bank and account holder, a statement period, an opening balance, the transaction table with its own column conventions, page breaks with repeated headers, and a closing balance that the transactions actually add up to. If a sample does not reconcile, you cannot tell whether your import lost a row.
Test them in a minute
Drop any of the six on the bank statement converter. Every row is checked against the printed balance and you can download Excel, CSV, QBO, OFX or QIF. The bank statement to Excel software page explains what the Excel file contains.
Questions
What does a bank statement contain?
The bank's name and address, the account holder's name and address, the account number (often partly masked), the statement period, an opening balance, a list of transactions with date, description and amount, a running balance on most layouts, and a closing balance. Business statements often add a summary of deposits, withdrawals and fees.
Are these real bank statements?
No. Every file is generated for a fictional "Sample Bank" with made-up names and amounts, and says so on each page. They exist so you can test software, templates and import routines without using anyone's real data.
Can I use a sample bank statement as proof of income or address?
No. A sample is not a statement, and presenting one as real is fraud. If you need a statement for a landlord, lender or visa application, download it from your own bank's online banking.
Why offer several layouts?
Because converters and spreadsheet imports fail on layout differences, not on the easy case: dates printed once per day, amounts on a second line, debits and credits in separate columns, CR and DR suffixes, or no running balance at all. These six files cover the differences we see most.
How do I turn one of these into Excel?
Drop it on the converter on the home page. Each row is checked against the printed balance and you get Excel, CSV, QBO, OFX or QIF. The file with the deliberate error should show one flagged row.
