Why QFX to Excel
Banks hand out .qfx downloads for Quicken, but if you don't use Quicken the file is a dead end. The transactions inside are perfectly good data: this converter reads them and writes a workbook you can sort, filter and sum, without installing anything.
What you get in the workbook
- Columns: Date, Description, Amount, Debit, Credit, Check number and Memo, with a frozen header and a filter.
- Dates are Excel dates and amounts are numbers, so formulas work without cleanup.
- The sheet is sorted by date, oldest first.
- Need Quicken's own QIF instead, or a QuickBooks QBO? Both are under Other formats after converting.
How the conversion works
1. Read
Every STMTTRN block is read: date posted, amount, payee, memo, check number and the bank's transaction ID. OFX 1 (SGML) and OFX 2 (XML) both work, as do credit card files.
2. Check
Rows without a readable date and amount are counted and reported, never silently dropped. Totals in and out and the period are shown so you can compare them with the source before importing.
3. Write
A real .xlsx workbook: Excel dates, numeric amounts, a frozen header row and a filter. No add-ins needed.
Starting from a PDF statement? The statement converter reads it and checks every row against the printed balance.

Questions
Can Excel open a QFX file directly?
No. A .qfx file is OFX-formatted text. Excel would show the raw tags in one column.
Do QBO and OFX files work too?
Yes, all three share the same structure.
Does it work on a Mac?
Yes. It runs in the browser on any computer. Nothing to install.
