Why CSV to QIF
QIF is old but it's everywhere: older Quicken, Moneydance, HomeBank, KMyMoney, Banktivity and plenty of accounting packages import it. If your bank only exports CSV, this converter gives you a QIF with date, amount, payee, memo and check number on each record.
Importing the QIF file
- Quicken: File, then File Import, then QIF File. Pick the account; QIF files don't name one.
- Dates are written month/day/year. Credit card CSVs become !Type:CCard when you set the account type under Options.
- Newer Quicken versions limit QIF to some account types; choose QFX under Other formats if yours refuses it.
- Most other apps: look for Import, then QIF, in the File menu.
How the conversion works
1. Read
Columns are detected from the header, or from the content when there is no header: a date column, an amount column or a debit and credit pair, and the longest text column as the description. Day-first dates are recognised.
2. Check
Rows without a readable date and amount are counted and reported, never silently dropped. Totals in and out and the period are shown so you can compare them with the source before importing.
3. Write
A !Type:Bank (or CCard) file with D, T, N, P and M lines per record and dates in month/day/year, as Quicken expects.
Starting from a PDF statement? The statement converter reads it and checks every row against the printed balance.
